An alleged history-sheeter was nabbed by police with the help of two alert Delhiites who clicked his photographs while he was trying to flee after snatching a woman’s gold chain and sent them to Delhi Traffic police’s WhatsApp helpline number.

The incident took place recently when two bikers snatched the chain from a woman in outer Delhi. “The incident was witnessed by two persons who tried to chase the snatchers and took photographs of them which also showed their bike’s number plate. These pictures were sent to Delhi Traffic police WhatsApp number 8750871493.

“Traffic police took out the ownership details and sent them on WhatsApp to DCP (Outer) Vikramjeet Singh,” Special Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Muktesh Chander said. On the basis of these pictures and details, a history- sheeter of Outer Delhi was arrested and a large number of other cases of snatching and robbery were also worked out. The bike in the picture was also seized.

The two Good Samaritans were rewarded by Chander at his office this afternoon. “The presence of mind, timely photograph taken through mobile, sending them to us on WhatsApp and subsequent quick action by outer Delhi police lead to this arrest. “If every person, who has a camera phone, is able to click photos in any such situation and send them to police, it will help us in prevention and detection of crime and traffic management,” Chander said.

These persons can act as there are walking CCTV cameras in every nook and corner of the city from which no criminal would be able to escape. Once again the power of collaboration of public with police using social media has been highlighted, he added.
