General Motors India Private Limited (GMIPL), the country's fifth largest passenger car maker, has increased its output vehicle production capacity to more than 2.5 lakh units per year in the country. Evidently, the company has ramped up its automobile assembly process at both of its Talegaon and Halol based manufacturing facilities. The announcement came through the American auto major in Ahmedabad on February 6, 2013. As per reports, General Motors India has increased the production capacity at Halol, Gujarat based plant from 85,000 to 1.10 lakh units and from 1.4 lakh to 1.6 lakh at its Talegaon manufacturing facility situated in Maharashtra.
Informing about ramp up in the annual production output capacity, P. Balendran, Vice President (VP), Corporate Communications, General Motors India, was quoted as saying, “Talegaon plant capacity is now touching 1,60,000 units, while the expanded installed capacity of plant at Halol in Gujarat is 1,10,000 units, which enables GM India to have capacity to produce over 2,50,000 cars annually.”
The American auto major is working towards introducing a new Chevrolet Enjoy Multi Purpose Vehicle (MPV) in the Indian passenger car market. The increased vehicle production capacity is believed to be aimed at incorporating assembly operations of the Chevy Enjoy model, which will be offered to the domestic car enthusiasts. General Motor India has claimed that the upcoming Enjoy MPV will be able to comfortably seat eight adults. Further, the company has developed the Enjoy platform in association with its Chinese joint venture partner- Shanghai Automotive Industries Corporation (SAIC).
Reportedly, General Motors has invested a total of $ 1 billion on its manufacturing and marketing operations in the Indian automotive sector. The American auto major is also looking to export components worth $ 1 billion in a couple of years, which are manufactured in India, to the overseas auto markets.
