With the increasing demand for AMT (automated manual transmission) equipped cars in the country, major automakers are aggressively working on this technology to tap the market. Carmakers like Maruti Suzuki and Tata Motors have already introduced this transmission on some of their cars, and are planning to bring more AMT-equipped derivatives of their existing models.Tata’s GenX Nano will be the next product from the home-grown carmaker to get an AMT.

With an aim to cope-up with the ever-changing technology and withstand competition, Hyundai and Renault will introduce AMT gearboxes on their upcoming car models in India. If reports are to be believed, ZF Friedrichshafen, the German car parts manufacturer, will supply AMT (automated manual transmission) modules to both the automakers.

The Hyundai Grand i10 will be the first model to receive an AMT, as suggested by reports. The hatchback is currently available with two engine options - a 1.2-litre petrol engine and a 1.1-litre diesel. Though the company already offers a conventional 4-speed automatic transmission with the petrol model of the car, introduction of a 5-speed AMT will make slightly cheaper. In fact, the company might also launch the diesel version of the car with AMT.

Renault India, too, is planning to bring its entry-level small car, the XBA, with an AMT. Likely to be named Kayou, the small car is scheduled to make its global debut on May 20th in India. Powering the vehicle will be a0.8-litre petrol engine.
