Mahindra and Mahindra plans to build an auto assembly plant in Detroit, Michigan.
The Indian carmaker plans to manufacture an off-road utility vehicle at the plant with a dedicated off-road course for the testing purpose. Mahindra North America will be the body responsible for the entire project. Further details of the said 400,000-square-foot facility are expected to be released later this month.
Mahindra has been trying to foray into the U.S. automotive market for 10 years now. The carmaker planned to sell pickup trucks in the States, with a dealership network of more than 300. Unfortunately, those plans were terminated in 2010.
Following that, in 2013, Mahindra established the Mahindra North American Technical Centre (MNATC) in Troy, Michigan. The MNATC is a comprehensive automotive design, engineering, and vehicle development centre which is focused on the US market. It comprises of many skilled designers, engineers and test engineers who are working on the company’s various global future projects.
These plans are still in its early stages. There are no further details of when the production in the new plant will commence. When conceptualised, Mahindra’s newly built facility will be the first new auto plant in the region in more than 25 years.
