One of the most significant launches for BMW India, the 1 series is due to be launched in 2013. This car will be a 5 door premium hatchback, designed to compete against the likes of the Mercedes A-Class. It is expected to be priced in the region of Rs. 18-20 lakhs, and will be the most affordable BMW vehicle in the country.
The 1 series will be assembled at BMW's local manufacturing facility in Chennai, which will help to lower overall costs. Units that are assembled locally attract lesser duties than imported CBUs (Completely Built Units). However, it is expected that the plant, which currently has a capacity to make 11,000 vehicles a year, may need expansion once the demand of the 1 series rises.
The BMW 1 series has already created its niche in the international markets. It is offered in different engine variants- a 1.6 litre powerhouse with 136 bhp and 170 bhp, and a 2.0 litre diesel unit producing 116 bhp, 143 bhp and 184 bhp. BMW enthusiasts in India may love all the options, but the company is likely to get the 136 bhp petrol and the 143 bhp diesel for India.
From every angle, the car suits the look of a BMW perfectly, with its cat-like lamps and the mean, aggressive look. It is powerful yet agile, and loves to be thrown around corners. Another feather in its cap is that the 1 series is a rear-wheel-drive machine, which would make it an absolute delight for enthusiasts.
Though the 1 series may be a hatchback, it still is a relatively big car for India. Well appointed interiors and exteriors, with a long hood created in a family style, makes it a great car for Indian families.
To sum up, one would expect the battle in the premium hatchback segment to intensify, as both the 1 series and the Mercedes-Benz A Class usher in a completely new price point, making it accessible to a larger segment of the population.
