      About Tata Zest

      Summary

Launched in 2014, the Tata Zest was the company’s first all new product under its Horizonext product strategy. It’s widely admired for its premium styling, class-leading features and competent engines. Designed with inputs from Tata’s design studios in Pune, Turin (Italy) and Coventry (UK), the compact sedan looks more premium than most Tata cars below Rs. 10 lakh. It gets new signature grille with the new ‘Humanity Line’, trapezoidal lower air dam, projector headlamps with chrome accents, ‘The Diamond DLO’ and ‘Slingshot Line’ on side profile and various other styling elements.

The interior, too, looks a lot better than many of its rivals thanks to the material quality and features. The car offers best-in-class features such as Harman’s ConnectNext infotainment system with 5-inches touchscreen, reverser parking sensor display, voice commands etc. Powering the Zest is Tata’s self-developed 88.73bhp,1.2-litre MPFi turbocharged Revotron engine and the Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre, four-cylinder Quadrajet diesel motor. The latter one churns out 88.73bhp with 200Nm. Power is transmitted to the front-wheels via a 5-speed manual transmission and an F-Tronic AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox.

Further to this, read Tata Zest Road Test details by our expert.

      Exterior

Based on the company’s new ‘DesignNext’ philosophy, the Zest looks more contemporary and premium than previous Tata cars. On the front end, the car features new signature grille with the new ‘Humanity Line’, trapezoidal lower air dam, projector headlamps with chrome accents, fog lamps, daytime running lights and pronounced hood. The side profile gets ‘The Diamond DLO’ and ‘Slingshot Line’. The bold shoulder creases and wraparound rear styling further enhance its appeal. Other styling elements include a new pair of 15-inches alloy wheels, LED taillights, rear view mirrors, rear bumper with black treatment and well-integrated boot.

      Interior

Similar to the exterior, the car shows significant improvement inside over previous Tata car models. Having a long wheelbase, the compact sedan offers ample cabin space. The height adjustable driver seat and supportive rear bench offer immense comfortable. It gets piano black finishing on center console, instrument cluster and glove box and silver finishing around AC vents and throughout the cabin that add a premium touch to its appearance. Feature list include Harman’s ConnectNext infotainment system with 5-inches touchscreen (3-inches on base-model), audio system with Bluetooth, iPod/USB and Aux-in connectivity, reverser parking sensor display, voice commands features and many more.

      Engine and Transmission

The Zest is available in both petrol and diesel engine options. Powering the petrol variants is Tata’s self-developed 1.2-litre MPFi turbocharged Revotron engine that churns out a maximum power of 88.73bhp at 5, 000rpm and 140Nm of torque at 1, 750rpm to 3, 500rpm. The diesel trims are powered by a 1.3-litre, four-cylinder Quadrajet engine, which produces 88.73bhp with 200Nm. A 5-speed manual transmission and an F-Tronic technology enabled AMT (automated manual transmission) gearbox are on offer.

      Performance and Handling

Both the powertrains are refined, and have well-controlled NVH levels. The 1.2-litre Revotron petrol engine delivers instant power with linear supply at all RPMs, but it lacks mid-range punch. Tata’s Revotron unit is first-in-segment to offers three drive mode selector - Eco, City and Sport. The new AMT gearbox is a great convenience, but isn’t smooth at high revs. The ride is balanced, thanks to the agile suspension that absorbs bumps with ease.

      Braking System

The front disc brakes and rear drum brakes provide adequate stopping power. ABS (anti-lock braking system) and EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution) further enhance its braking capabilities, though the pedal brake could have been slightly more responsive.

      Mileage

The 1248 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 20 kmpl in city and 22 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 16 kmpl on urban roads and 18 kmpl and freeways, respectively.

      Safety Features

The Tata’s compact sedan doesn’t just deliver impressive mileage; it also ensures a safe drive. The car comes equipped with a plenty of safety features such as front dual airbags, ABS (anti-lock braking system) + EBD (electronic brakeforce distribution), perimetric alarm system, front seat belt pre-tensioner with load limiter, front and rear fog lamps, immobilizer and speed dependent auto door lock system. Though, one must note that the aforementioned features vary variant-wise.

      Verdict

With premium styling, best-in-class features and frugal engines, the all-new Tata Zest makes a perfect deal for buyers. It’s an absolute fun-to-drive city car.

Tata Zest Final Long Term Report

In our first reliability report of the Tata Zest, we loved a lot of bits about the compact sedan. There were a few flaws that we had pointed out. Now, after 7000 kilometres with the Tata Zest we have come to a lot more conclusions on how has the Zest performed as a product. What are the positives and the negative aspects of this compact sedan.

      Tata Zest HD Poster

The hard seats of the Zest are highly comfortable for long distance travel. This makes it a great option to consider for long drives. We have done several Mumbai-Pune-Mumbai trips and the good bit is all the occupants feel comfortable and do not feel tired even on long journeys. This is one of the strongest points on the Zest.
      Tata Zest Pictures 11

The music system is certainly a gem with the Harman speakers that have amazing sound output quality. There is no other vehicle that comes with Harman or equivalent brand’s music system. But then there is some amount of lag when you operate it from the steering controls be it while changing tracks or answering a call. With Android devices, when you make a call from the device it doesn’t connect to the system. One needs to shift to Hands Free mode every keep you make a call. At times there is a conflict between the music that the system shows and the what the smartphone plays.
      Tata Zest Images 15

The biggest plus on the Zest is its 1.3-litre multijet engine. With the AMT, it does take some time to get used to driving, especially in city. In bumper to bumper traffic, one needs to get used to the point when the turbo spins and this could be a tricky situation initially. For the highway, the AMT tuning is ideal. No creep function makes will make it difficult to drive in bumper to bumper city traffic.

We achieved a fuel efficiency of an average of 15km/l in the city, while on the highway the number rose to about 22km/l. This makes the Zest highly fuel-efficient, especially when we consider it doesn’t have a manual gearbox.
      Tata Zest Images 26

The ride of the Zest one of the best in its segment. The compact sedan glides over potholes, however it does make a crashing sound. This makes it sound harsh, but in reality it is a lot smooth and the suspension irons out most of the road shocks. The Zest has a softer rear, which means more comfort for the rear passengers. Despite all this, it has good handling characteristics. It does well around bends. It might not have the alacrity like its European competition but it does a fairly good job.
      Tata Zest Images 13

The electronic steering wheel is light and this makes it easy to manoeuvre in city. On the highways too the steering has a good feedback. It is only on bumps that the Zest steering feels disconnected, especially when around a corner. The steering wheel is small and nice to grip.

There are no bottle holders in the Zest and this is one major downside when it comes to storage space. There is a single cup holder at the front and apart from this there is nothing else. This is a major let down when it comes to practicality of the compact sedan. The door pockets are also thin to not fit any bottles into it.

There are some minor plastic quality issues with the Zest. The interiors look sturdy but the look and feel isn’t at par with the competition. This is one aspect that isn’t in favour of the Zest. The power windows switches, indicator stalks and even the air-con knobs need a bit more force to use than what the competitor does. This changes the experience of how the vehicle behaves. In terms of reliability there is no doubt that these plastics will last and not fall off.

But then the Zest comes at a lower price tag than most of the competition and better quality will demand a higher price tag. The compact sedan segment is more of a compromise segment that has been built to fulfil the needs of those who want more in less. And this can be achieved by some cost cuts.

If you are wondering to pick a Zest AMT for yourself, we will recommend this compact sedan. Pick up the XMA variant, as this has more than enough features and the XTA can be avoided.

baught it in EMI, its looks are very alpha, no chit chat edges like girly vechiles, servicing of the vehicle is very easy only some times the store cannot provide me with the parts other than that its awsome, driving is like riding on beast, eco mode is ok but once switched to sport mode its hard to control the vehicle speed, I use sport mode only when i need to overtake a vehicle, its llike instant pickup in seconds time.

        Whats Good

I totally unconvinced while taking the thought of Tata brand before 2015. I had taken test drive of Xcent, Desire, Etios Liga, Aspire even i20, but Zest is mind blowing, never follow other, make your own trend set.

        What Can Improve

Some space of bottle like kinley, aquafina etc, driver seat adjustment in lower models, rear ac vent.

Now coming to the flip-side of my vehicle with a long-term ownership - 22,000 KMs in 2 years 5 months. I own this XMS model from 2014 Dec which is the initial launch of the vehicle, 1. The suspension really gets accumulated with small particles and you feel like something has broken when you bump your car into a pothole or gutter roads Solution: You need to keep washing the suspension which forces the dust particles or mud 2. Mileage is a concern. It sometimes goes to 8km/l in traffic conditions and max I achieved is 12.5km/l with Eco mode in city traffic conditions Solution: Do not cross 1500 RPM inside city 3. The engine cuts off while driving in bumper to bumper traffic while using clutch to move in busy traffic. Solution: Not yet determined for 1 year now, these are my questions for this issue and I hope someone can answer the below situation. I would like to know about the initial pick up in traffic - City Mode. Whenever you are using half clutch does the RPM drop to below 500? What is the idling RPM while at stand still? Is it below 1000 rpm or above? The reason I am asking is because at the initial 1st year, I never used the accelerator while driving in peak traffic. The half clutch drive was doing the job pretty well. During the 2nd year I had to use the old tradition style by using the accelerator and release the clutch to move forward. Which is irritating in peak hours. Is it a problem with all the Tata Zest vehicles or something wrong with my vehicle or its commons for vehicles after a certain period of time? I have complained regarding this to the service center and company `n` number of times and they end up updating the ECU and said the issue is fixed, unfortunately never fixed. I got fed up leaving my vehicle at work shop for days. Is there a solution to this problem!!!

        What Can Improve

        Exterior Designing to some extent.

Bought this car last year on 22 Oct & am enjoying it. The best in class features. The strong built body & better Kerb Weight makes it safer & in more strong grip with the road while driving. Smooth Drive, the best from Tata, compared to their previous cars. The average is really good. I have even touched the average of 28.2kmpl on highway driving constantly @ 85-90 kmph on long run of 200 km or more. Gr8 car with Gr8 performance. :)

        Whats Good

Design are really look like a luxury car its drls powerful light, I have an xm model, on my first trip I am go to kedarnath the route are very difficult but not for me I don't feel much difficulties in my cars its wishbone suspension are so good like the other costly car very tough in style and it takes 3.5 stars out of 5 in crash test or without airbag, I used it from long time and run approx 22000 km but I don't see any problem in the car its harman system and 8 powerful speakers give clear voice on full volume AC is awesome when we go to Mehndipur Rajasthan the temperature is almost 43 degree but we feel very relax inside the car heater is also awesome use only one time in Kedarnath I think it is best car in her segment and best for all middle class people.

        What Can Improve
