About Fiat Avventura
Summary
The Indian car lovers have been quite demanding over the last decade or so. Initially, it was only the hatchback, sedan or SUV category prominent in the industry. However, the number of segments has been widened because of the high demands of various features and choices over the number of years in the Indian car domain. Now, there are several additional categories, which include super-compact hatchback, a compact hatch model, a compact sedan, a premium sedan and a handful more.
Volkswagen was the first to introduce a cross model - Polo Cross, which had a slightly more rugged appearance to give that raw feel. Toyota had introduced a similar model with the Etios Cross. However, these models were far away from creating a new segment altogether as these cars were treated as extended versions of hatch models. However, with the entry of Fiat Avventura in the scenario, the industry has taken note of the rising popularity and demand for cross models. Gone are the days, when cross models came with same ground clearance of hatchbacks and only loads of more plastic coating. The industry has taken note of the entry of this model - Fiat Avventura.
Further to this, read Fiat Avventura Road Test details by our expert.
Exterior
The first thing that you must have understood by now that the name of the car has been taken from adventure in Italian. It is somewhat of a toned down SUV, when it comes to its looks and performance. The engineers at Fiat have taken good note of the demands if the customers and increased the ground clearance. Also some suspension modifications have been made when compared with the standard Punto Evo. The riding experience is fabulous, courtesy the high-profile rubber used in the tyres. The car does not really give a feel of the disturbance and potholes on the roads. No noise and no reduction in comfort are encountered when the car makes its move across the rugged roads.
The most prominent feature of the Fiat Avventura is the mounted spare wheel at the rear of the model that imparts the much-needed SUV touch. Some interesting new off-roading instruments add to the adventure of the Fiat Avventura such as the inclinometer, which shows the driver the angle of the car while driving.
The front bumper of the model has been given a totally new look, which include a brushed aluminium touch and a couple of rugged features here and there. The sides remain as they were, except for an additional cladding from plastic. Though, the spare-wheel attached on the hinge at the rear gives Avventura the SUV touch, it also makes accessing the boot space a cumbersome affair.
Interior
Fiat is known to be a brand, which makes the interiors of its cars with delicate precision. It never compromises on the comfort aspects of the interiors of the car, be whatever the situations. Fiat Avventura is no different with comfort being the catchword in the seats and the cabin inside. With a delicate and dextrous of faux leather and fabric being used in the seats, the interior is spacious, comfortable and imparts a touch of class.
The dashboard has been revamped as well, with a dual-tone finish, which first strikes the eye.The central console comes with the inclinometer. Other standard features are placed perfectly to keep in tune with the ergonomics. Drivers can easily carry out the operation without even taking an eye off the road ahead.
Engine and Transmission
Fiat Avventura comes with both petrol and diesel options under the hood. It comes with a 1.4-litre petrol engine for those who favour petrol over diesel. The other option is the 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel mill. The transmission duties are done by a regular five-speed gearbox system.
Performance and Handling
The regular gearbox makes it quite a soft name as per industry standards. However, there is a lag in the turbo, which will oblige you change ratios sooner. However, with the added ground clearance and other standard features, Fiat has done a good job to introduce this segment in India with some reputation.
Braking System
Ventilated disc brakes have been mounted on the front wheel to improve the control of the car while drum brakes have been utilised on the rear. Due to the presence of AB, linear braking pattern is followed even when the brakes are jammed at high speeds.
Mileage
The 1248 cc Diesel - powered variant delivers a fuel economy of 18 kmpl in city and 20 kmpl on highways, while the Petrol variant offers a mileage of 13 kmpl on urban roads and 15 kmpl on freeways, respectively.
Safety Features
Anti-lock Braking System (ABS) has been provided as a standard in the new Fiat Avventura. Other safety features, which ensure a comfortable journey, both while normal driving or occasional off-roading are central locking system, driver and passenger airbags, rear seat belts, door ajar warning and crash sensor. Child safety locks, side impact beams, passenger side rear view mirror and engine mobiliser make sure of the little details that boost the driving experience.
Verdict
This might just be the car, which will suit the dual needs of urban driving as well as the occasion weekend getaway for an off-roading experience. The specifications and features deftly suit both the occasions.
Competition
The Fiat Avventura will face a stiff competition from Toyota Etios Cross as well as Volkswagen Cross Polo. The segment has just entered the country so other cross models are expected from a number of manufacturers, which might later become a rival for this model.
Pros
- High Ground Clearance
- Comfortable Driving Experience
- Smart Off-roading features
Cons
- Standard Transmission System, which reduces the efficiency

Avventura Expert Review
Opening
Is it a Punto? An Evo? Or an Avventura? In fact, it is all of this…and more. This is the new Urban Cross. And, put simply, it is another iteration of the same body shell the new Punto Evo sports. It is the Avventura but misses out on the tail-gate mounted spare wheel to make it more urban. And there are a few more changes as well.
Appearance Exterior
On the outside, besides the tail-gate, there are no significant changes. The Urban Cross has the Punto Evo’s new found aggression. The oval grille is new while the swept back blacked out headlamps complete the fascia. The muscular creases on the bonnet with the tweaked bash-plates add muscle to the facade.
The Avventura’s peripheral cladding, bash plates in the front and the back and the thick side moulding does make it look macho. The spare wheel on the tailgate goes inside the boot and we love it. It helps the beautiful Italian rear-end stand out.
The petrol Urban Cross comes with a ‘Powered by Abarth’ badge and scorpion wheels, but let us get to that later.
Appearance Interior
The Avventura Urban Cross comes in three trims – Active, Dynamic and Emotion. The dashboard curves nicely on to the doors and the dual-tone interiors elevate the sense of space. The front seats are comfortable and the visibility is good from the height adjustable driving seat but lacks lower back support. The rear seat can seat three and is angled well for comfortable seating. It is split 60/40 for the Emotion trim and is foldable for the Dynamic as well but misses out on the rear armrest in both.
The compass and altimeter dials from the Avventura make way for a cubby hole large enough to stow your wallet and it gets a cover lid in the Emotion trim. The centre console gets touchscreen infotainment with Bluetooth telephony et al while steering mounted audio controls are reserved for the Emotion only. Automatic climate control is offered on the top-spec car while the Dynamic trim gets manual air conditioning. The binnacle of the instrument cluster reads speed and revs and comes backlit in amber. The multi-function display at the centre has the trip computer with average speed, average fuel consumption, instantaneous fuel economy and distance to empty.
Owing to its almost four metre length, the boot is big but the high loading lip would make it inconvenient, especially for heavy luggage. The folding seats also tumble up opening up more cargo space. There are bottle holders in the front doors but they don’t fit a litre bottle while the rear passengers do not get any stowage space except for the cup holder between the front seats.
Thanks to the heavy build, the insulation is good especially for the road noise and there are hardly any vibrations or harshness. It also lets you hear the engine when the music is turned off. The plastics though, look cheap and the trims could have been much better, especially the worn-out denim-like cloth finish on the dash of the Dynamic. The almost white trims (and leather in the Emotion) will be difficult to maintain.
Performance Drive
‘Powered by Abarth’ is what drew us in. Yes it is the same 1.4-litre four-pot turbocharged petrol that we have seen in the Abarth Punto and develops 138bhp of power at 5500rpm and 210Nm of torque from 2000rpm. Mated to a five-speed manual, this engine will make you smile every time you step on the gas. The other option you have is the tried and tested 1.3-litre MultiJet diesel mill. Also mated to a five-speed manual gearbox, it comes with a variable geometry turbo and develops 92bhp of power and 209Nm of torque.
If you mash the Abarth throttle, it is going to spin and buckle, twitch and torque steer even on tarmac. The tall gearing and high revving nature of the engine is a delight as the Abarth pulls you beyond a ton in around 10 seconds. Surprisingly, it isn’t flat at low revs and you will have no issues if you opt for traffic-infested commute as well. The diesel is nice too. Once you gain momentum, the 1.3MJD is great. Yes, there’s some diesel clatter and it gets loud when revved hard, but it goes. The gearshifts are also lighter as compared to the Abarth. While the torque peaks after 2200rpm, it builds up linearly from about 1800rpm offering good driveability.
The Abarth suspension is stiff and holds up firmly in corners. The responsive steering is precise and provides feedback. The steering on the diesel is lighter and filters the feedback but is as precise as the Abarth. The suspension setup on the diesel is softer and adds some body roll to the dynamic equation. The ride is pliant but still on the firm side and soaks up bumps well at both low and high speeds.
While both versions run the same 205/55/R16 tyres, the Abarth gets all four disc brakes while the diesel gets discs only at the front. The Abarth brakes have that initial bite, give feedback and will let you know exactly when the ABS would start kicking in. The front disc-rear drum brake setup works great on the diesel as well and the braking is progressive with ABS to back you up in case.

Conclusion
The Urban Cross does everything that the Avventura can and is slightly better at that. But when compared to the competition that has the Hyundai i20 Active and the Toyota Etios Cross, you will see the chinks in its armour. The plastic quality is nowhere close, nor is the feature list nor the convenience but is more than a lakh cheaper as compared to the Hyundai. But bring after sales into the picture and Hyundai and Toyota are aeons ahead especially when it comes to spread and reach of service stations. So, if you want peace of mind the Korean or the Japanese work better. But, if you want a fun car with performance par excellence, the Abarth powered Urban Cross is probably the best offering for a sub-10 lakh price tag.
User Reviews for Avventura
Car is good but not easy to maintain due to bad service
Whats GoodThe style, performance, ground clearance, fuel consumption, cabin space ,booth space
What Can ImproveThe fuel consumption not as good as advertised but not bad. The main thing is the service which is integral to the value of the car. It took Ramkaye service Chennai two months before they obtained a mudflap spare for the car. The staff lied at first and then refused to answer the phone...last week we discovered that the bodyshop manager had not even ordered the spare. Bluetooth and ma which come factory installed with the higher model does not work...the voice recognition dos not recognise any local names and one out of ten English ones. We lodged this complaint a few weeks after receiving the car in 22/1/2015 and till date this has not been resolved. The service staff sat one afternoon in a parked car yelling at the moicrophone to no avail and the regional service manager sent an email with copy/pasted pages from the manual and a promise of a phonecall of the service station which I am still waiting for. Service is as much part of the value of the car as any accessories and will never improve if it is not made an item in the reviews.
Due to abysmal state of the service, I will never buy a Fiat again
