The Fiat’s new compact sedan has been spied testing ahead of its global unveiling on May 21st at the Istanbul Motor Show. The test mule was completely camouflaged, though a few interior spy-shots reveal its cabin design and equipment.
The prototype is equipped with a three-spoke steering wheel that has taken its inspiration from the Fiat 500. Though, the mounted center console seems to have been borrowed from the existing Linea. While the 2-DIN music system is positioned higher, HVAC (heating, ventilating and air conditioning) controls and vents are placed below. The test mule looks like the top-spec model of the lineup, as it features chrome lining around the vents and the rotary knobs.
For the European markets, the new compact sedan will be offered in both petrol and diesel engine options. Both the powertrains will be mated to a manual transmission, similar to its prototype. That said, the company might introduce an automation or AMT (automated manual transmission) on the sedan. The diesel version is likely to get Fiat’s popular MultiJet engine – either a 1.3-litre or a 1.6-litre.
The new compact sedan was designed under the joint venture of the FCA Style Center and Tofas’ R&D - Fiat’s Turkish partner. According to a report, the car’s production will take place at the Tofas facility between 2016 – 2023. The sedan will be exported from this manufacturing unit to over 40 regions. Though, there is no clarity whether the company will bring-in this compact sedan to India or not.
