Volkswagen India recently announced to launch five new models in the country in the next two years. One of those products will be the Volkswagen Tiguan that will make its global debut at the 2015 Frankfurt Motor Show. The same model will also be brought to India via CKD (completely knocked down) route, and then assembled locally with certain local components. The VW Tiguan is expected to be showcased at the 2016 Delhi Auto Expo.
The new-generation Volkswagen Tiguan will be bigger and more angular than the existing global model. The production-ready version of the SUV will look similar to its concept, which was revealed at the Sao Paulo Motor Show in 2012. Though, it will share some styling cues with the new Passat. The Tiguan will be based on the MQB platform that also underpins the Volkswagen Passat and Volkswagen Golf. This makes it lighter and more efficient than before.
If reports are to be believed, Volkswagen might introduce the “long-wheelbase” version of the SUV – the Tiguan XL – and a ‘coupe-crossover’ variant – the Tiguan CC. While the former will feature a 7-seat configuration, the latter one will feature an attractive 5-door coupe-crossover design.
Powering the 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan will be a new and more efficient TSI and TDI engine lineup – a 1.0-litre TSI three-cylinder and a 2.0-litre TDI diesel. While the front-wheel drive system will come as a standard feature, VW’s 4MOTION electronic all-wheel drive system will be offered only on the top-end variants.
The 2016 Volkswagen Tiguan will face the challenge from the cars like Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, and the upcoming Chevrolet Trailblazer, new-gen Ford Endeavour and Toyota Fortuner. It is expected to be priced around Rs. 25 lakh.
