According to a report, Tata Motors is working on a premium hatchback, codenamed X451, that will be based on Nexon concept unveiled at the 2014 Delhi Auto Expo. Set to rival against the Hyundai Elite i20, Maruti Suzuki's upcoming YRA hatchback and the Volkswagen Polo, Tata's new premium hatchback might be launched in 2017.

The new premium hatchback - X451- will share the platform with the Nexon that also underpins the Bolt hatchback. Though, the company might modify the X1 platform to make it more stylish and sportier. The hatchback will take its design inspiration from the Nexon. It will feature a wide grille on the front end, and get a new rear styling. Since the X451 will be pitched against the Elite i20, Tata might equip the car with lots of comfort and connectivity features.

Powering the X451 hatch will be the same 1.2-litre turbocharged Revotro petrol and Fiat-sourced 1.3-litre Multijet diesel engine that will also power the Nexon compact SUV. While the former produces a maximum power of 84bhp and 140Nm, the latter one delivers 73.97bhp and 190Nm. That said, Tata might tune the engines for better performance.

The Tata X451 premium hatchback is expected to unveil in 2017. Though, the company hasn’t yet said anything about the product and its unveiling. Along with this, the home-grown automaker will launch a couple of new cars including the Tata Glade (Kite hatchback), Tata Boom (Kite sedan), Tata Nexon (compact SUV), Tata Hexa (new-generation Aria) and Tata Mobia.f
