Yes, the iconic Polo has completed 40 years. It was first launched in 1975 and to celebrate its 40th anniversary, the German manufacturer has launched a special edition in its native country and has named it Polo “Original”.
The limited edition Polo will only be replicated 1,000 times and will come out with the same engines as an ordinary one except for some changes. It will receive an exclusive “Honey Orange Mettalic” paint job which cannot be seen in ordinary Polo. Portage 16 inch wheels will be fitted as standard as well as the LED headlights. Inside it gets orange themed leather trims mingled with black. The cost of the special edition Polo will be € 19,950 which is roughly Rs. 14 lakhs. Visually, the car get “Original” emblem beside “Polo” to denote that it is one of the special editions.
The first edition of Polo was available with 3 engine options and since then the company has managed to sell more than 14 million units. The 1975 Polo was nothing else but a rebadged Audi 50 which was fitted with a 0.9, 1.1 or 1.3 litre engine. It has come a long way now and is known as one of the best entry level (premium in India) hatchbacks in the world. There are several GTI models of the Polo being sold around the world which have been redefining performance hatchbacks.The car also takes part in various race series with stripped down interiors. The 2015 version of Polo GTI is powered by a 1.8 litre turbocharged engine which churns 190 bhp which is enough for the car to hit 100 km/h from standstill in less than 7 seconds.
The hatchback also comes in a sedan version in India known as Vento, which is nothing more than a Polo attached with a boot.
