German car maker Volkswagen has showcased two of its newly developed powertrains at the ongoing automobile show in Austria – the Vienna Motor Symposium. Notably, the automobile giant has unveiled two powertrains highly different in capacities. While the smaller 1.0-litre is a three cylinder TSI unit, the other is a colossal 6.0-litre W12 engine.

According to the automaker, the lower capacity 1.0-litre TSI unit is based on the much used engine from the EA211 series, which powers models like Polo, Octavia, Jetta and Vento sold in the Indian market. Quite incredibly, the small three cylinder 1.0-litre unit is capable of producing an output of around 270 BHP along with peak torque of 270 Nm. Speaking about this engine, Dr. Heinz-Jakob Neußer, the Group’s Head for Powertrain Development, said, “A nice example of just how much potential combustion engines still have in them.” Though this engine was put on display, Volkswagen said nothing about whether they will be used for production yet.

The other engine that was unveiled at the 2015 Vienna Motor Symposium was the huge W12 6.0-litre unit, which is well and truly production ready. According to Volkswagen, this engine is among “the most fascinating power units with the highest technology density in the world.” The German automobile giant has also claimed that this powertrain will be the most economical in its class and have CO2 emissions as less as 250g/km. At full capacity, this engine can propel a vehicle to clock 100 kmpl from scratch in under four seconds along with attaining a top speed of 300 kmpl. Also, this engine can produce a maximum output of around 607 BHP and peak torque of 900 Nm.
